Posted by BarryJ on April 26, 1998 at 14:03:52:I have suffered from nocturnal headaches for about 12 years. At first they were about one a month but now they are every night. I awaken after about 3 to 4 hours sleep with a dull pain behind my eyes. I am also aware of my heartbeat at this stage as if I have had a rush of adrenaline. If I get up the pain immediately lessens and will go away completely in about an hour. If I stay horizontal (and sometimes I sleep through the first 'warning signs') the headache becomes very painful and can go over to a one sided migraine type. Again if I get up the pain immediately lessens but takes much longer to go away and I usually take ibuprofen to help it.
I have mild hypertension that was discovered when I initially complained of the headaches. I was originally diagnosed as having hyperaldosteronism but now that theory is losing ground because my aldosterone levels are OK (just on the high end of the normal range).
I am taking spironolactone 25mg, amiloride 5mg and lately clonidine 0.1mg.
I have had my eyes checked, my teeth checked and am scheduled to see a neurologist soon. I had a brain scan 10 years ago that found nothing.
The problem seems so simple and can be summed up as, "When I lie down, I get a headache and when I get up it goes away." The solution appears to be elusive. Any ideas - and thank you in advance for your help.
