Hypnogoggic Phenomena

Posted by Morgan on April 28, 1998 at 05:54:38:

I have suffered with a falling asleep disorder for over two years, I've been to see a neuromedical consultant and he decided that I have got a form of Hypnogoggic Phenomena, when it first started I felt as though I was falling backwards very quickly into darkness, it was very scary, now its changed, and when dropping off to sleep I experience the falling and not breathing at the same time, its a horrible sensation and even though I haven't got the right to say this (as I haven't ever done it) I feel as though I'm dying, I actually rear up in the bed sucking in breath.....also my hands are often numb. The doctor told me that there aren't any drugs for this condition although some medication for other disorders have been found to have a beneficial effect, sadly what I tried didn't work for me.....this doesn't occur every night, around 3 out of 7, I look back to when going to sleep was a pleasure and can't believe that now I have to say to myself "you do wake up, no matter what it feels like you do always wake up" its crazy. If anyone else experiences anything along these lines I'd really like to hear from them for some support, I can't believe I've just got to live with this, its so horrid and you can't avoid it, you have to sleep!
