Hi Donna Sue,

I have been working with CPAP patients for several years, and can tell you that CPAP does take some time to get comfortable with. Ask lots of questions at the sleep lab, your equipment dealer, etc. Most importantly, try on several types of masks to find one that you can get a good seal with and be comfortable with. The mask is by far the most important component of a CPAP system. You may need a humidifier, a heated humidifier, or no humidifier at all. I suggest trying it without one first because you don't want to hassle with more stuff than you really need. If you get a very dry airway, then ask for a humidifier.

As far as being scared, CPAP is very low-risk. If you have a sinus infection or ear infection, or if your skin breaks down where the mask touches, you probably shouldn't use it until it clears up. Other than that, the risks are few and far between.
