Not my original idea, but I suppose it is because of the potential for drying the mucus and making it more difficult to drain from the sinuses. When you have a sinus infection, it is recommended that you stop using the CPAP until it clears up. If you change the filters, clean the tubing, etc., there won't be any increased risk of infection, but if it happens, you should take appropriate action.
Also, never hesitate to talk to your physician and equipment dealer (assuming they have a respiratory therapist or other credentialed health care professional) about these issues.
To my knowledge, no one has ever died from using CPAP. There has been one anecdotal case of pneumocephalus (air entering the brain) among probably hundreds of thousands of CPAP patients. The point is that you really don't need to be frightened of this. Educated, yes. Scared, no.
