16 years + No Deep Sleep unless with "rotating" medication

Posted by Sherri on May 01, 1998 at 23:26:23:

My sleep disorder started when I was 19(I am now 35). My experience is that I get into a sort of light sleep but don't get the deep restorative sleep I need. I have never heard of anyone else with this. I do not lie in bed awake-I do get into some sort of sleep however I "snap out of it" at some point and do not feel rested at all. During this type of sleep I experience somthing between thoughts and dreams. I can go several nights in a row like this and can barely function during the day- I get headaches, no energy etc. I have seen every professional I can think of. When I was 23 I saw a psychiatrist who diagnosed me with depression, even though I never felt sad or had any other symptoms of depression. He put me on an anti depressent (surmontil) and it worked very well. After about 4 years, I tried going off it and the problem came back. I went to a sleep clinic in Vancouver and they were only able to rule out apnea, narcolepsy and restless legs. The 2 nights I slept there, I was so tense that I stayed wide awake so they didn't really observe the light sleep. They did not have any recommendations. I switched to another anti dep.- Trazodone and that worked for awhile. Then tried zoloft (so-so). I have also seen hypnotists, naturopaths and massage therapists and have tried all the sleep hygiene stuff. Nothing but the meds has worked. I worry because each med seems to lose it's effectiveness after awhile. I am now back on surmontil - I took it through my pregnancy ( it is deemed safe) . I am now also taking a sleeping pill (imovane) as I have been very stressed lately and the surmontil alone wasn't doing it.
Anyway, over the years, i have tried to keep up on sleep info and I have never come across anything like what I have. If anyone has experienced anything like this, I would love to hear.
