Sherri:
Although I have no advice, I can commiserate with you. I also spend a lot of time in vivid dreaming, startling awake, etc. Some nights it seems like I awaken 20-50 times, and then another night I might only awaken 3 times. I have excessive daytime sleepiness, EDS, and have since a child, experienced all the symptoms of narcolepsy, except daytime cataplexy, but since I didn't test well at the sleep clinic either, I cannot get a diagnosis. My doctor has 8 possiblities for me and I have gone through experimenting with drugs to determine the problem. Antidepressants did nothing for me, and I did not feel as though I had a problem with depression either, anyway. Klonipin, clonazepam, worked miracles at first. That was when I realized how bad my sleep had been before. It was the first time I could remember sleeping all the way through til morning, but I developed a tolerance very quickly and am now coming off over a three month period. Needless to say my nights are very active again. Ritalin keeps me going during the day. I thought that I would never resort to taking it, but it has really evened me out, most of the time, in spite of bad nights. My choices coming up, when weaned off of clonazepam, are to up my Ritalin dose (that's) scary, or try Tegretal at night. From what I've read on this forum, rotating medications because of tolerances is all the docs have to offer us. There are some postings of natural alternatives, all of which would not have been enough for me. One woman said she took 4 fifteen mininaps a day. AS IF one could have a family, job and a life around that routine.
I hope you find a med that works well for you and a doctor you have confidence in.
I'm so thankful for this Sleepnet, it is as much of a support group that I can find for now.
Wish you the best. Bev
