As implyed in a previous response, some "light sleepers" have their own disorder which acts by waking them up repeatedly and keeping them form reaching the deeper stages of sleep. Some light sleepers however, just are, and nothing will change that. A "white noise machine" in the room may help by creating masking noise that will block out extraneous noises like your coming in late. My favorite is a big box fan that sits on the floor.
Also foam earplugs from the drugstore work very well at blocking noise too. Mine are rated at 29db noise reduction - the highest I can find locally.
