I am no expert, but I have been researching different sleep disorders for a long time. What you are experiencing is called Lucid Dreaming and is something that a lot of people work very hard to attain. Especially people with frequent nightmares. There is a lot of information out there on Lucid Dreaming, mainly how to do it, but you may find something to help you control the fear. If you can get a handle on that, you can gain great insight into dilemmas that may be affecting your waking life.
