My doctor prescribed the heated humidifier after I was having a terrible time with bloody noses all the time. I guess the insurance company was feeling generous at the time, because later they pulled out and claimed that they didn't cover anything.

Regarding heated vs. non-heated:

I have read studies that say that non-heated is nearly as useless as no humidifier, and that the heat is really important, because that is how your nasal passages will benefit. I have heard stories of how people put heating pads under the cold pass-over humidifiers, but this can be tricky and possibly a fire hazard. fight for the heat if you can!
