Extreme difficulty in waking up in the morning

Son cannot seem to awaken in the morning. His radio is on full volume, I shake him, I scream at him...he doesn't hear me for at least 45 minutes after his first call. This has been going on since middle school. Does anyone else have this problem? Are there any books on this subject? Please help.
