Hi, Julie,
First of all, I recently read that sleep deprivation can worsen night terrors. About my testing, it wasn't real easy. I have HMO insurance, so ,of course, the primary care physician has to give you a referral. I had such a history with extreme fatigue. I do have hypothyroidism and depression. (At least at that time that's all I knew I had.) I had started having trouble with simple things like turning at the right place while driving. Just drove right on by! Kind of like a fog or something. I was always sleepy and tired. I had always suspected a sleep disorder, because I've always been sleepy and slept long hours etc. (When I taught school, I'd come home and have to sleep 3 hrs. before doing anything else.) Anyway I explained everything to my doctor and he said he didn't want to put me through all that! Can you imagine? And there's not really anything to it. (Must have had something to do with his pocketbook. I don't know exactly how those HMO's work.) So I practically I had beg him to send me for the tests! And he's the doctor who was so exasperated with me because I was too tired to exercise! So I finally got the referral. I was tested overnight and found to have a mild case of sleep apnea, which would improve if I lost some weight. Then the doctor kept me during the day for the MSLT test for narcolepsy. I don't have all the symptoms but enough to qualify. So as far as I know you would probably start with your regular doctor. Make sure you have a list of all your symptoms you feel contribute to your problem. I would think the night terrors would be a good indication that you need to be tested. See what your doctor says and let me know how it goes. Don't give up!
By the way, I was diagnosed with the narcolepsy in 1994 then fibromyalgia in 1995.
Good luck to you and God bless!
