Without having to write a lot of details, if you read anyone's stories on this web site relating to daytime sleepiness and difficulty staying awake daily because of sleep apnea, you'll have a lot of the symptoms of deprived R.E.M. sleep. To give you a start, some days it is absolutely impossible to stay awake, memory can be affected, a person can have "daytime dreams"- like dreaming while awake - almost like hallucinations. Their accident risk is much greater, etc. Treatment for Apnea is usually the CPAP - Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. Also there are surgeries, dental appliances, etc. With this outline, I'd go back through all 4 forum pages and you'll see other people's experiences and understandings of lack of R.E.M. sleep.
Hope this starts you on track. Good luck with your book.
Louise
