I have a very similar experience. I wake up thinking that something awful is about to happen and that I am going to die if I don't do something. I usually wake up with my heart pounding and disoriented. It takes few mintues to realized where I am and that everything is ok.
I have found that I am more likely to have these episodes when I am overtired and I try to take a nap the next to day catch up on sleep so that it doesn't happen again. Fortunately, I'm single and don't have problems disturbing a partner.
Good luck on your problem.
