Dan:
How frustrating. If I may I recommend that you research Sleepnet's "Sleep Disorders" section and every link you can find to find more information. Another source of overlooked information is our own selves and our bed partner. Start tracking for a period of time just how often you actually wake up, what times, how vivid the dreaming was, and are there other symptoms that you have in the past not noticed. When I filled out the sleep specialist's questionaire before going in to visit him, my husband answered some sections differently than I did. So we had lengthy discussions about things I did in the night or other times, that I had overlooked (maybe because I was too tired?) Do you have excessive tiredness in the daytime because of the awakenings? This forum is great for support, but only a neurologist that specializes in sleep disorders can give you a diagnosis and perhaps a helpful medication or alternative. Even though I had written down for two weeks all my times of sleep arousals, it wasn't until I was on Klonipin, or clonazepam, that I found out what it was like to sleep restful, without waking up to vivid dreams or sudden jerks. It made me realize that I had been waking up more like 5-40 times a night. Unfortunately, I built up a quick tolerance to that medication and have to come off of it slowly. I take Ritalin to keep me going through the day, but do not know yet if I want to take another drug to get me back to deep sleep. Taking care of ourselves and underlying sleep problems takes some time sorting it all out. I wish you the best.
