Hi, I am a wife, mother, full-time Secretary and Full-time Evening student at age 42. I was diagnosed with Narcolepsy in 1989. I went back to school during the Spring 1984. As of 6 JUN 98 at the Georgia Military College, Milledgeville (Ft. McPherson) Georgia (10:00 a.m.), I will receive my Associate of Applied Science Degree in General Studies. The medicine I am on is Ritalin in which I take 10 mg three times daily and 20 mg SR once daily. In the beginning, I was affected with just the uncontrollable sleeping spells. Currently I feel that the Narcolepsy might be getting worse yet I am not certain because I am not being monitored by a doctor at this time. My means of coping with my Narcolepsy has been naps as often as I can get them, making sure that I take my medicine, cut back on outside socials, not overloading myself with obligations that I feel that I might not be able to keep; tuning out people who are negative which sometimes may include family members. Since I intend to try and get my Bachelor Degree in Computer Information Systems, one of the first things that I have learned about myself is my will of determination. The last three years were not easy. I started out taking 3 classes a quarter in the evenings and working 8-9 hour days. After 3 and half months my body began to fight back. I was taking very few naps at this time. Shortly after that I began to have migraines (5 in one week). I found out that this was causing me to much stress so I pull back on my classes and began alternating between one-two-three every other quarter. Fellow you can continue your college education. Don't give up. Talk with your instructors, friends, a support group, family and more so, your doctors. If I can help in any way or more than that let's encourage each other. God is the source of our strengths. We just need to figure our weakness and stay focus with a little help from people like those who have been writing to you. A Friend.
