As a pharmacist who has worked at several state prisons, the medical staff has little concern for insomnia. The ambient nature of the daily lives of inmates seems to lead to a self solving remedy.
Benadryl was once used, but discouraged due to side effects and tolerance.
They just consider insomnia is nothing to lose any sleep over.
If a person, incarcerated or not, goes without sleep for a period, they will eventually get sleep. this assumes no pathological sleep disorder.
Unfortunately, this attitude is also used in pain control. except in terminal ca cases, rarely is anything beyond apap and ibuprofen used.
The only controlled substance I recall dispensing regularly was phenobarbital elixir- with dilantin for seizure control.
I do not know how osa is treated in prisons presently.
