I'm an EMT student in Riverside, CA and hile doing a clinical in the emergency room at RCH, a nurse informed me of this rare disease called Pickwickian Syndrome. A patient we were treating was suffering from the effects of it, and I ended up finding another person within a few weeks who also had this condition. Because of my two separate findings and their closeness, I truly wonder how rare it is. Most obese people I know or know of suffer from the same signs and symptoms. These include dyspnea, sleep apnea, sleepiness, low oxygen levels in the blood due to the lack of breathing. They also tend to display congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, and I seem to have found that they have very similar appearances and a very foul body scent. I wonder how much of this is because of their morbid obesity, and stems from complications associated with it.
Obese people do tend to have greater risk of heart disease and problems of this sort. They also tend to sweat much more creating a stronger body odor. The weight seems to hinder their breathing abilities, thus leading to the dyspnea and sleep apnea mentioned previously. The similar look I seem to have found is probably due to the collection of fat around the face and similar body fat displacement.
All of the information I have found also states that with weight loss, symptoms begin to disappear. This goes to show that being obese and out of shape can lead to other major health problems, and prevention is the best method of living. Get out, get exercise, eat properly and in moderation, and don't let your kids sit around collecting fat either. I'm sorry if this offends anyone. I'm just stating my findings and figuring out solutions that should, theoretically, work.
