It has been reported that most people with Downs Syndrome have sleep apnea. Especially in the kids. This is probably the cause of the sleepiness. So he should be tested to see how severe it is and proper treatment should bring back alertness. You may want to take a look at sleep apnea on the sleep apnea information page. Click on Sleep Disorders Button and then click on Sleep Apnea.
