EKG artifact

During a study, we encountered EXCESSIVE EKG artifact in all EEGs, both EOGs and TIBs.
We repositioned the EKG electrodes, referenced A1 and A2 and under the Chapter "Grasping at Straws", even repositioned A1, A2 and the Ground!

I have never seen anything like it!
In Butkov's Atlas, there is something about excess body fluid.
The patient was morbidly obese and one of the techs thought that she looked more edematous than on her last visit (no EKG artifact then).

My question (finally): Is it possible that an excess of fluid in her torso would cause this to happen AND what could we have done to reduce the artifact?

Thanks for any insights.
