I am a graduate student studying restless leg syndrome, and am curious as to how patients, docs, and sleep labs bill insurance companies for restless legs syndrome (and other "unknown" disorders). How are sleep evaluations ordered, ie does the doc state that s/he is looking for insomnia or sleep apnea, which the insurance company recognies as a legit disorder, when in fact the doc suspects RLS? Do sleep labs have to enter separate insurance codes for each PSG channel, or can a doctor order a full PSG and the sleep lab puts in a single code for payment? In the academic world, we just write up grant proposals, but how do patients and sleep labs get along in the real world dealing with a disorder that many physicians, let alone insurance companies, don't even know exist?
