There is the 3 minute rule for stage 2 where if you are in stage 2 and do not have a sleep spindle or K complex for more than 3 minutes, you have to go back and score those epochs stage 1.
The second 3 minute rule concerns starting REM sleep. (R&K page 10 top left) If you go for more than three minutes with EEG and EMG at REM level without eye movements, and there is a movement arousal followed by eye movements, the movement arousal is not counted and REM starts where the EEG and EMG went to REM level. If the movement arousal occurs in less than 3 mins. you take REM back from the eye movement to the movement arousal and start REM there.
