I have been having much the same problem with my 8 week old. She will sleep for much longer in my arms, or in the car, but in her crib she only sleeps for a couple of hours. Much of the time I resort to her sleeping in our bed. I find that the closeness seems to settle her and at night she now can sleep about 5-6 hours in our bed. If you really don't fancy that option, I have also had some success with the following:-
Swaddling tightly in blankets - when I put her down she sleeps in a much more restful manner and for longer periods
Constant background noise - this sounds really bizarre but it has worked for me. Try putting the radio on in the background - not tuned to any station, just let it hiss away at a fair volume. This seems to mimic the sound of the car and sends her to sleep - it also soothes her when she is crying with colic. The hoover and hairdryer also work, but are much harder to sleep through than the radio!!
Hope this helps
