What time are you usually putting your son down for the night at? And does this time stay fairly consistent? My son had a similar problem and it turned out that we were putting him down too late in the evening (8.30 was his bedtime before). He was getting so overtired that he was incapable of staying asleep because his little body was so wound up. Now we pput him to bed as early as 6.30 some evenings and he sleeps straight thru until usually 7 am. Before that (from 4 1/2 months to 14 months) he was up all the time at night to the point that he was up every 45 minutes by the end. We were all exhausted and nerves were wearing thin. Now we feel like a new family and he happpily goes to bed.

good luck.
