Page 122 of Babywise says to go ahead and transition to a flexible 3-4 hour routine after 9 weeks of age. Before that, it says to stay at a 2.5-3.5 hour schedule. I think if you shorten his waketime, you'll have better luck with the naps and he'll naturally fall into a 2.5-3.5 hour routine.
