how to get my 18wk to sleep

I need information badily about teaching your baby to sleep. Ryan is 18 weeks and 18 1/2 lbs and does not sleep through the night. He also does not sleep in his crib, only on someones chest, when you try to put him in bed he awakens a few minutes later. Can someone help me? I want him to get the sleep we both need.
