Hi,
Clearly, your son isnt responding to Ferber. Personally, I went through CIO as a baby and still have major sleep anxieties, so I cannot rule out long term ill effects.

This may take a little longer, but it really can work! First, since he's overtired, you may have to help him catch up on his sleep for a few days by holding him for his naps like you've always done. Get him back into the habit of napping at specific times. The go out & buy a Fisher Price Peaceful Planet Aquarium. Start on his first nap of the day as soon as he looks sleepy (not overtired). Go through your soothing pre-sleep routine, and lay him in the crib with he aquarium turned on. It's very soothing. Stroke his hair. Repeat [his name]'s OK, go sleepy now (or whatever makes sense to you). Occassionaly rub the bridge of his nose as this will make him blink, and his eyelids may start to get heavy. Eventually, you will rub him a little & sit near his crib repeating your mantra. If he cries, go right back over his crib & stroke his hair.

The first time I did this, it took 45 minutes (be prapared for the long haul). DH thought that was a long time until I reminded him that it could have been 45 minutes of hard crying. Each time subsequently has taken less time.

He needs to know that his crib is not a scarey place. You may have to let him play around in his crib for a few days before trying this. Sounds like he's scared of it right now.

Let us know if it works. It may take 1-2 weeks, maybe less :)
