HELP!12mth old wakes every night won't settle down

Can anyone help us. We have a wonderful 12mth old boy, he is active/lively/happy during the day and will go to sleep with a struggle at 9-10pm but then he wakes up after about an hour, really crying in a distraught state. We've tried rocking him back to sleep but as soon as we let go of him to put him in his cot he wakes immediately, we've tried stroking, patting, comforting him but nothing seems to work. After 30 mins or so I end up bringing him into our bed, Once in our bed he goes to sleep immediately, sleeps through the night no problems then, but its not the ideal solution, he needs to learn to sleep alone but how? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
