It was a few years ago, research done with rats. Whoever did the study, recorded the electrical pathways in the rat's brains with and without fearful situations. The rats that were made afraid when young, stayed afraid through adulthood, even when the fear was irrational. They seemed to perceive a threat, and their brains registered fear, when there really wasn't any. Apparently once the pathway is opened it doesn't completely close.

It makes sense that a baby left to feel afraid and not comforted, even when the threat is only perceived, would grow into a fearful child, and adult.
