Sounds like you have a very smart little one on your hands. It's almost like he knows that if he wriggles to the top and bumps his head he knows that you are going to be there straight away but that you will leave again.
Does he go to sleep easily or does he fight? It's not uncommon for bubs around this age to start a rather large growing spurt and some are trying to cope with teething. Maybe, if you tried picking him up and reassuring him for a little bit and putting him back in his cot. He may grizzle for a bit but you can only try I suppose. I know a lot of people don't reccomend putting a cot bumper around the edge but you can get the one that cover the top with a lot of padding and that may stop the bump hurting so much.
