Colleen,

If you would read my post again, I said that my first two slept through before one year. What I didn't say was that my third son had medical problems including being on an apnea monitor, my fourth had a difficult time because we went through a traumatic move when he was about 8 mos.old and it affected his sleeping patterns. My youngest is a "high-needs" child, and she would not sleep through no matter HOW I parented her. There are some children who WILL NOT sleep through the night, no matter what you do, until THEY are ready. You HAVE to be flexible in these cases, and sometimes this means giving up the convenience of sleep until your child overcomes their individual challenges.

Studies show that babies, especially breastfed babies, are DESIGNED to wake up frequently at night. Sleeping long stretches is an exception, and may even be dangerous at young ages, possibly contributing to the risk of SIDS. (if you are interested, I can give you links on this subject)

Also, many people,(although not ALL) find that the family bed eliminates much of the stress involved with trying to get a baby to "sleep through the night", especially in those situations you mentioned. I offer this as a suggestion so often because it is not as widely known as other options such as "crying it out". I am assuming that the parents who come here are already familiar with the conventional suggestions and come here for new ideas.

We may not agree on everything, but then no method will "work" for every family. If what you do works for you, great! If what I do doesn't work for you, don't do it! That is the beauty of being individuals. :-)

See you 'round the board!

Stephanie
