Another bad sleeper-Help!

Posted by Emmitts Mom on January 31, 2001 at 14:38:55:

Okay, my problem probably sounds like everyone else's but sometimes venting helps. Any suggestions would be great, I don't have time to go back to the archives to check for similar problems.

Here it goes. I have a 4 month old son (who is very cute!) who is having a problem with staying asleep. He has just gotten really good at falling asleep on his own in his crib but doesn't stay that way for long. His naps RARELY last for more than 30mins. (unless we are in the car) and at night it is common for him to wake up every 1 1/2-2 hrs. I know he doesn't need to nurse that often how can I get him to go back to sleep at night without sticking a boob in his mouth.

I would like to get an idea from any of you who have children the same age as to how long they nap during the day. My son will usually nap about 4 times (1 morning and 2-3 afternoon naps) a day lasting like I said about 30 mins. I this about right? I'm thinking he should be sleeping more during the day. My daughter (now 2) slept through the night at this age right after I put her on formula (this doesn't mean I reccommend it) so I am somewhat spoiled by her perfect sleep habits. She still sleeps 11-12 hrs a night with a nap of 1 1/2-2 hrs. So I am having a really tough time adjusting to my son.

I have a tip for any of you who are at the end of their rope and are starting to have negative feelings towards their non-sleeping baby. I have made a habit of watching certain shows on channels such as The Learning Channel and Life Network. These shows consist of programming dealing with sick kids in the hospital. Last night I watched a particularly poignant one. I believe it was call Children's Hospital of Orange County (something like that). It was all about these really sick kids in the NICU. I find that after watching shows like this it makes me really grateful for the my healthy son and helps me deal with the really insignificant problem of not getting enough sleep. It will end and I tell myself that every day.

Prayers to you all
