FREQUENT waking in a one year old

Posted by Griffin's mom on February 09, 2001 at 18:55:40:

Hello there,

In reviewing all the other messages, I must say it's comforting to know my husband and I are not the only ones with a poor sleeper...

We are parents to a happy, outgoing one year old who is a HORRIBLE sleeper and has been since birth. Advocates of attachment parenting, we have tried everything for our little one to help him and us in the sleep department, all to no avail. Until Griffin was six weeks old, he slept no more than an hour at a time,, usually 45 minutes. A gruelling schedule for me as the only food source, I must say!!!

At six weeks, this increased to almost two hours in a row, a level it stayed at until he was 7 months old. Now at a year, we will occassionally (and I mean very occassionally), get a three hour stint out of him but on average, he continues to wake up every two hours.

When Griffin was tiny and nursing exclusively, he of course wanted to nurse several times throughout the night and would dose off doing so. As he grew, he still wanted to nurse but also would just be awake. Comforting, rocking, rubbing or patting, cooing, etc. never work.

Our son began his days in our bed from birth, only napping in his crib throughout the day otherwise. (Incidently, his naps are usually limited to two twenty minute stints daily. Even though he's been in daycare and is simulated by this, he still only naps briefly twice a day.) In our bed or his own, there is no difference in his sleeping.

As you all can appreciate, we are walking around like zombies. Routine doesn't help, a nightly massage is just an added perk after Griffin's bath, attachment parenting seems to only go so far, the Ferber method was a bust and hurt us to even try, soft music seems to be for our benefit only and we just don't know what to do.

Outside of the usual cold and infrequent ear infection, Griffin is otherwise healthy. He eats like nobody's business, still nurses on demand and is well adjusted to daycare while we're at work.

If one of us were home full time, we would perhaps feel better equiped to deal with this. However, as we are both working and need to rise early, we are just feeling more and more frazzled as the weeks and months go on. And, we are terrified at the prospect of having another child with such sleep habits and are therefore, seriously considering only one child!!!

Anyone out there have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Griffin's mom
