waking to infant to eat

Is it recomended that an infant not be wakened to eat? My one month will sleep 4 hours and then iWake him to eat.I was told that an infant shouln't go more than 4 hours without eating? Is this Right? I would like him to wake himself but is this Wise? Any suggestions?
