I'm not a medical professional, just a mom with
a child who has suffered from night terrors for
several years! Night terrors at that age don't
have anything to do with their "psychological"
state. They aren't awake and aren't aware of
what's going on. It's so terribly hard to do, but the terror just needs to "ride it's course" out before anyone will be able to console the child. Some say kids who are overtired or
getting sick (fevers, colds, flu) will start to have terrors. Some even suggest waking the child 10-15 mins after they fall asleep to somehow break the sleep cycle (we never tried it). Some think the need to urinate can "cause" the terror.
Lot's of speculation and ideas out there. I guess it couldn't hurt to try some of them!

This website has info on night terrors, as well
as some pediatric web sites.

Good luck! What a great caring caregiver you
are to be concerned and interested in learning about this "sleep disorder".
