I have a 19 month old son. He has good sleep habits, but does wake up in the middle of the night sometimes. The times I've noticed is when there is a change in the house(someone visiting or me or his father not at home). There were a couple of times that he would wake up from a nightmare screaming and I would just hold him or rock him until he calmed down and then put him back to bed once he was quiet. He would fuss at first but I would still leave his room and he would be back to sleep in 5 minutes or so.
I think you should use your judgement if something woke him up like a sound or he would wake up on his own but not screaming I wouldn't even go into his room I would let him fall back to sleep on his own. I know the difference in the cry if he's affraid or just irritated for being woken up.
good luck
