Sounds all too familiar to us. We have a 5 1/2 month old who has always been sleeping for 1/2 hour naps during the day. I can actually say that after months of working on it I think we are finally getting her to sleep for longer than 1/2 hour for her naps (they were usually exactly 1/2 hour). The things we did were, we implemented a routine for all naps which we follow, this didn't help the 1/2 hour but helped her go down easier, cause with 1/2 hour naps you put them to sleep more times per day. I think she just wasn't mature yet in the sleep department..as Weissbluth(sp?) says some don't mature till later so you just have to wait.
Other things we did were we would go to her when she wakes up after the half hour, we would try to be there upon the first movement and lay our hands on her and sometimes she would go back to sleep. Sometimes this worked sometimes not. When this didn't work sometimes I'd just get her up, but recently I just let her play in the crib with me beside her, and once she expended some energy she'd go back to sleep with me laying my arm on her again. Sometimes this took 1/2 an hour and then she would go back to sleep for 45min-1 hour so to me it was worth it. Like you at the end of the day she was cranky and I knew she wasn't getting enough sleep. She's just waking up now from a 1hour 10 min nap, but at the 1/2 hour mark she stirred and I went to her and layed my hands on her and she went back. She's always slept well at night we've just had the 1/2 hour nap to deal with. Hope this helps some.
