I can understand your concern very well! My son is 8 mo. old and has JUST started napping longer than 25-30 minutes on occasion. My son also wakes frequently at night. You're right--the average 7-8 mo.old infant needs 11 hours at night and approx. 3 hours of sleep during the day. My son does not get enough either. I do have a suggestion for you though... After having read too many "sleep books" I found some good advice which stated that the easiest way to help your child get more sleep is to put them to bed earlier. The added bonus is that the earlier bedtime does NOT necessarily make the baby wake earlier in the morning (especially once the new bedtime becomes a routine). One author I've read also states that once the infant begins napping better during the day, night-time sleep will be more restful. Contrary to what most would think is common sense, the more the infant sleeps during the day, the better and harder they will sleep at night. I know this is frustrating to hear when you don't have a napper!! Hang in there, and try putting baby to bed earlier--you may solve both problems! It helped my little one.
