crying before daytime naps

Help! Are you experiencing this?

My 3 1/2 month old son always cries before daytime naps. During the day he cries for about 10 minutes before falling asleep - it doesn't matter if I'm holding/rocking him, or if he's laying in the crib or the swing. I try to put him down when I believe he's ready to sleep - when he's in the crib, I let him cry but stay in the room with him and rub his tummy so he knows I'm there. Sometimes it seems as if just being horizontal sets him off. Once he's sleeping, he'll nap for anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours. I can't figure out if he wants to fall asleep but can't or if he wants to stay up with mommy/daddy... This has been going on for several weeks - and his nap length is getting a bit shorter each passing week.

Nighttime is fine - bath at 7, nursing, falls asleep between 8-9, I wake him around 11 for one last feeding and then he sleeps until 7-8 in the morning.

Thanks in advance for your feedback!
