My son slept in his carseat for the first 3 months (or more?) because he had problems with congestion and sitting up helped him breathe. I just put the carseat into his crib, or on the floor next to my bed (in the summer) so I could reach out and touch him if he needed me. (when he was very small, I kept the carseat right in the bed with me!) I don't think there is any safety problem with letting him sleep in a carseat. If sitting up helps him sleep, you might want to double check that there is not a physical problem like acid reflux, ear infection, swollen adenoids, or just congestion that might be keeping him from sleeping lying down. You could also try elevating one end of his crib by putting a pillow or folded blanket under one end of the mattress to raise it to a slight incline. Personally, I would probably just let him keep sleeping in his carseat if he sleeps well in it. Eventually he will outgrow it. (actually, my son who slept in the carseat is my best sleeper!)
You probably know this, but never leave your baby in his carseat on a raised surface like a countertop, dresser, couch, or anything he could fall off of, even for a minute. I kept my son loosely strapped in while he slept so he could not accidentally roll out. (when they start rolling over, they usually won't want to sleep in the carseat anymore!!!)
Best wishes!
Stephanie, mom to 4 boys and a princess!
