Getting a 3-week old to bed: what can be expected?

Posted by Julia's mom on February 08, 2002 at 16:46:29:

Hello! I'm so glad I found this board.

Just want to ask your opinions. My 3-week daughter is a terrific sleeper (for her age) at night (4+ hours at a time). But actually getting her to bed can be a 2-hour endurance test. We have her sleeping in a bassinet in her own room. She will not fall asleep on her own. Getting her to sleep in her bassinet requires a long series of nursing, rocking, cradling in arms, etc. When we gingerly place her in her bassinet, 9 times out of 10 she's instantly awake and crying. And the whole process starts over again.

At what age can you reasonably start training/expecting a child to start "putting themselves to sleep"?

Are we in big future trouble if we let her fall asleep BEFORE she's in bed (even now at 3 weeks)?

Also, the whole "don't let them rely on a prop to go to bed" issue: The nursing. It is the only thing that really calms her down. Should we stop doing this?

Thanks in advance!
