My 4 month old daughter would do the same thing. Each time her legs hit the mattress they would fly up again. My husband and I would laugh at how loud a noise she would make when she kicked the mattress. But she would startle during her naps and couldn't resettle due to kicking and flying legs and therefore only napped for 30 minutes at a time. Sometimes the leg flying would start at the beginning of putting her down such as after a feeding in the middle of the night. I would lay in bed and listen to the pounding on the mattress wondering if she would go to sleep. WHat a nightmare for us and for her! We started napping her on her tummy and things are so much better. She protested at first not being used to sleeping on her tummy. But now when she startles at 30 minutes her legs can't fly up and 4 out of 5 times she goes back to sleep. Before this we use to run in the room and try to hold her legs down(gentle pressure) sometimes this helped if she wasn't too awake yet. I researched alot about infant sleep and the experts say that as a baby matures so do their sleep cycles; staying longer in deep sleep and therefore extending naps. But for now this tummy thing has worked wonders. To make it as safe as possible I use the monitor and listen for her breathing. I removed bumper pads to increase air flow into the crib and Im going to buy a special mattress cover that blocks toxins in the mattress from the flame retardant coating etc. I think these things will put me more at ease about putting her on her tummy. Im not suggesting you do this, I realize that infant to back sleep is recommended medically but I did find tummy sleeping to be a requirement by my little girl.
