Sounds a lot to me like she could have problems breathing while asleep. Making extra effort to breath. Other signs of a breathing problem is mouth breathing, awake or asleep, and sleeping on the stomach, neck arched forward, and sometimes with the rear up. Failure to thrive is also another sign.

These do not have to be observed for there to be a breathing problem. But if you see these you don't need much more information.

Sometimes it is due to tonsils and/or adenoids.

There are other things that need to be ruled out like seizures. If it is repetitive and stereotypic then there is a chance it is seizures.

The last thing you need to rule out is pain or discomfort and colic.

Really know way to know, the child should be seen by a sleep specialist.
