Seems like you have had lots of replys, so I don't need to rehash what other have said, but just know that we had the EXACT same problem. At around 2 mo or so, my son started taking short little naps and was clearly still tired when he'd wake up. The problem is that 35-45 min is the end of an infant's sleep cycle, and he just hasn't learned to transition back to sleep again. My son has been going to sleep on his own since he was 3 mo old (meaning I put him in the crib awake), but still wouldn't go back to sleep after the 45 min naps. Just now that he's 6 mo I've seen this incredible turn-around. After so many days agonizing over his sleep and not being able to go anywhere because he was so cranky, he's just now sleeping longer naps. Sometimes I've even had to wake him up from his late afternoon nap so that it doesn't affect his bedtime. So, just hang in there. Do the best you can to keep him as well rested as possible and that's all you can do. I really have faith now that the issue is their need to mature, and 6 mo seems to really be a turning point. This nap thing really seems to be a wide spread issue with infants and since I've been reading and posting at the forum I've found that no one really knows what to do about it other than wait it out and try to remain sane. And enjoy your little baby. I can't believe 6 mo has gone by already for us, and soon this whole nap thing will be history for you too!! Good luck. Hang in there. I'm sure it'll get better with time. One last thing, as my son was able to move to a 4 hour schedule (around 4/5 mo) we'd do an eat, play, sleep, play sleep routine instead. That way I wasn't waiting around for his next feeding to go down for a nap and wasn't feeding him earlier (like every 2.5 hours) just because I wanted to stay on our routine but I knew he needed to sleep. The result was he was taking up to five 30-45 min naps per day. That seemed to work well for past few months. Just an idea. Good luck.
