We've been pretty lucky because although our son didn't sleep well during the day, he always slept pretty well at night. But at around 3 mo or so, I decided I wouldn't get up 2x's at night, only once. So we started to make his bedtime earlier (a la "Healthy sleep habits, happy child") and I'd only get up with him once around 2 or 3, then he'd be down again until about 6:30 or 7, so he was doing 2 - 6 hour stints around 3/4 mo. I think that's pretty realistic. It wasn't hard for us to not get up with him. Only a few nights was it difficult. My son was breastfed at that time too. At 4 mo we switched to formula. Just now, at 6 mo, has he started to wake at around 4 and he's not really hungry, just playful. So, now we leave him in the crib to play as he wants and he falls back asleep until morning - no crying at all. So, honestly, I thought my son would NEVER sleep thru the night (and I mean 10-12 hours by that) and I also NEVER thought he'd nap well. I think six mo is absolutely a turning point. Hang in there. Every baby is different. Don't be afraid to drop a night time feeding though if you don't want to do it, AND he doesn't seem really that hungry, he just wants to be put back to sleep. That 4 hour schedule was hard to do at first but my son got the hang of it eventually. I know exactly how you feel though. I was there just a few months ago. I promise it'll get better, as long as you stay positive and stay on your routine - making sure he at least naps a little. Good luck!
