I'm going through the same thing with my 13 month old son. He takes a long nap in the morning. He refuses to sleep in the afternoon anymore unless he falls asleep in the car when we are out. I think that once he gets wound up for the day after lunch, there is too much happening for him to sleep. I think one year old babies are going through a big developmental/learning phase.
I have also tried to get him to stay up later in the morning, but it has backfired. His nap was shorter on those days.
I've decided not to worry about it, and appreciate the fact that we have a good 6 hour chunk of time to get out of the house and do things. I always hated having to rush back to the house for his afternoon nap. I'm assuming that he will start shifting his nap time later when he is ready. The drawback to the early nap is that he is really tired by 6:00 p.m., but most of the time it is not a problem keeping him up for another 45 minutes or so until his bedtime which is usually between 6:30-7:00 p.m.
