I looked at my logs today, and my dd at 7 months was getting up at about 5am. We would feed her and sometimes she would go back to sleep and sometimes not where as she used to always go back when she was younger. I have read that it is common for young babies to wake early for the day and that they will grow out of it which Abby has done. She is almost 1 yr and is still an early riser, about 6:30-6:45am. Bedtime is usually about 6:30-6:45pm. As for the wake times, I think every child is different and you have to just find what time is right for your child which is what I always had problems with-my dd never gave me sleepy signs until it was too late. I also agree w/ Beth that if she woke after 30 min, I would give it at least 15 min to see if she would go back to sleep. Eventually they do sleep longer for naps-mine didn't until about 8 months except for the occassional long one.
