I think at 4 months maybe 20 min of crying is enough to see if they will fall asleep on their own. Then get them up, do what you normally do, and try CIO again next time. This is just how I feel, but you have to go w/ what you can handle. When my dd was a little older we would go w/ 1 hr-most of the time she would either fall asleep w/ in 1/2 hr or play a lot of that 1 hr. She never screamed the whole hour or I wouldn't have been able to handle it! I would just get her up after about 1/2 hr.
