You were a lucky mom not to have to deal with multiple awakening earlier. It is natural for infants to wake up several times during the night. Until your infant develops a strong circadian rhythm, could take 6 months but could happen sooner, trying to put him on a schedule can have a negative effect on his development. He needs food only when he is hungry, and sleep only when he is sleepy. As he ages his body will develop a schedule similar to the one that goes on in the house. Just need to wait a bit and help him along for now.
One thing that you may be concerned with is his wanting to sleep on his stomach. This could be a sign of a difficulty breathing while asleep. His sleep should be silent, effortless, few movements, and basically, sleeping like a baby.
If you have a video camera you should video his sleep and view it to see what happens during the night. If it looks as though he is having a problem during sleep the video may be all an infant sleep specialist would need to make a diagnosis.
