2 1/2 month old won't stay asleep

My 2 1/2 month old has the hardest time staying asleep. I spend my entire day trying to put him down for a nap and all night trying to get him to stay asleep He stays asleep as long as I'm holding him, but the second I put him down, his eyes are wide open. Or he'll stay asleep for 10-20 min then he's up and screaming. I have to put him down 3-5 times at night before he stays asleep. I don't understand it because it is obvious he is so tired. He's always rubbing his eyes and his eyes are all red. He always is wanting to nurse to sleep and I'm going back to work (nights) soon and daddy will be putting him to bed. I can't figure out how to break him of it. He's also extremely gassy and I think gas pains is what wakes him up. I'm getting very frustrated, I actually had to set him down to scream by himself for a while last night and just walk away. If anyone has any advice, I would love it! Thanks in advance.
