Posted by SammyJenkis on March 12, 2007 at 07:14:47:My wife and I have a 3 month old girl, and things have been great with her up until about 3 weeks ago. It takes generally 2-3 hours to put her down to sleep at night and we're worried that we are creating a negative sleep experience for her and making it worse. I want to describe our current routine, and ask for any advice / comments... this is really getting frustrating for us.
Our baby is generally very good at staying asleep once she falls asleep. She typically goes down around midnight, and will sleep for 6 or 7 hours before waking for a feeding.
She generally wakes up at 9am, and is happy and playful for the next few hours. We usually put her down for a nap around 1 or 2pm, and she'll sleep for about 3 hours. After waking from her nap, she is again, happy and playful. She starts showing signs of being tired around 8 or 9, and then my wife and I try to put her down to sleep.
We are supplementing breast feeding with formula, and we'll give her a bottle just before bed. Its usually during this bottle feeding session or shortly thereafter that she simply goes berserk. The only time she stops crying is when she is held in an upright position and bounced around (we don't think there is a medical condition as this only happens at night).
Anyway, the only way we can get her to sleep is by holding her and walking around the room until she falls asleep in our arms. This usually takes about 2-3 hours, and several handoffs between my wife and I. We have soft music playing in the background, and the room is at a good temperature with a nightlight, etc...
We've read a lot of books that suggest letting her cry while she's in her crib, but both of our families tell us that as soon as she starts crying to pick her up and comfort her. We both have a hard time just letting her cry, but at this point we are afraid we are making things worse.
Any help / advice is much appreciated!
